Expecting Adam: A True Story of Birth, Rebirth, and Everyday Magic

by Martha Beck

John and Martha Beck were graduate students at Harvard when Martha became pregnant for the second time. Like her first pregnancy, Martha was plagued by horrible morning sickness, as well as the academic pressures of Harvard. But this pregnancy was different. An amniocentesis determined that the baby would be born with Down syndrome. Urged by John and the medical staff to get an abortion, Martha refused. What followed was the struggle for Martha and her family to cope with the lack of Harvard perfection in the yet to be born baby.

I saw this book at Borders and thought it sounded good. Luckily, I checked it out from the library. It's weird. First of all, the book is more about Martha than about her pregnancy. In fact, I had gotten more than halfway through the book when the diagnosis was actually determined. Secondly, there are some weird out of body experiences reported, as well as hokey angel experiences/references. Finally, I was questioning the truth of this memoir (James Frey strikes again).

Not recommended (obviously).
