Shinju

by Laura Joh Rowland

When a wealthy young lady and a low-born artist are found drowned together in a shinju, or ritual double suicide, it is assumed that this was a case of forbidden love. But newly appointed yoriki Sano Ichiro isn't so sure, since the two parties have never been connected to one another. His superiors command him to halt the investigation, which adds to his suspicions.

Unable to ignore his instincts, Sano quickly becomes entangled in a web of deceit, death, and very shifty wealthy people. He disobeys his superiors' instructions in order to find the truth, and as he races towards the answers, he risks everything: his job, his family’s honor, and the lives of those around him.

Sano is a very likable sleuth, and Rowland creates a fascinating mystery set in seventeenth century Japan. A great first entry in a mystery series.
