I Was Told There'd Be Cake

by Sloane Crosley

More than one blurb on the book's cover describes this collection of essays as "hilarious." Other praise includes: "funny," "enchanting," "mordant and mercurial wit," and my absolute favorite, "a postmodern Mary Tyler Moore."

Really? I don't think that we read the same essays. In fact, I am sure of it. I did not find these essays to be anywhere near funny. Kind of whiny. The pop culture references never rang true for me (don't even get me started on Oregon Trail).

The only essay to which I could relate was "You on a Stick." Why? Because it was about being a bridesmaid, and every woman can relate to that horrific (and very unfunny) experience.

Great cover, great title, great blurbs, but sadly, Crosley's essays simply do not deliver anything promised.
