This novel picks up right where we left off at the end of The Luxe:

• The Hollands are still mourning the "death" of Elizabeth,
• Penelope Hayes is still scheming to marry Henry Schoonmaker,
• Henry is still lusting after Diana Holland, and
• Carolina Broud is still posing as someone wealthy.

Additionally, Elizabeth has safely reached California and the arms of Will Keller. What follows is the continuation of all of these plots, as well as the introduction of some new characters.

While it's not as juicy as the first novel, Rumors is an entertaining sequel.
