Honolulu

by Alan Brennert

First things first: Honolulu is not nearly as great as Brennert's other historical novel of Hawaii, Moloka'i. But don't let that stop you. If you're curious about the islands and their history, Honolulu is a great introduction.

Honolulu is the story of a Korean girl, Regret, and her desire to make a better life for herself. She wants to learn to read, and this is not acceptable for a young lady born in Korea in 1897.  In order to escape Korea's oppressive scene, Regret becomes a "picture bride" and travels to Hawaii to marry.

What follows is a tale of the fate of picture brides and so much more. Plantation life, racial conflict on the islands, and the pursuit of the American dream are all examined in this wonderful, easy to read novel.

I agree, not as memorable as "Moloka'i" but a wonderful novel nevertheless. Can't wait for more from Brennert!
