The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food

by Jennifer 8. Lee

Have you ever eaten a fortune cookie? Have you ever played the lottery? Have you ever used the numbers from your fortune to play the lottery? Many people do. In fact, on March 30, 2005, 110 people were second place winners in the Powerball drawing. And where did they get their numbers? Fortune cookies.

This interesting fortune cookie/lottery story led the author to further research the fortune cookie business. One thing led to another, and soon Lee was researching all things involving American Chinese food. Some of the topics covered are as follows:

• What’s so Chinese about American Chinese food? If anything?
• Who is General Tso, and why are we eating his chicken?
• What is the origin of the fortune cookie? Hint: not China.
• Who actually uses soy in soy sauce?
• How did the business of Chinese food become so big in the United States?

Lee answers these questions and many more in her light and tasty book. And yes, you’re hungry for more after an hour!
