by Lori Lansens
Mary Gooch is fat. No getting around that. She’s been fat all of her life, except for that one year in high school. That was the year that Jimmy Gooch fell in love with her.
Fast forward to the eve of the Goochs’ silver anniversary: Mary Gooch is abandoned by her husband.
What follows is a journey of self-discovery for Mary. She travels to sunny California to find her husband (that’s where his parents live) and winds up finding friendship, self-worth, and even an ounce of happiness.
This is not as good as Lansens’s other novel, The Girls. Don’t be fooled! Improbable situations, an unlikable heroine, and a less than satisfactory ending all plague this novel. Skip it.
