This is the best novel I've read in a long time. In a nutshell, Major Ernest Pettigrew is a quiet, intelligent, and very dignified retiree in the English countryside.
His younger brother's sudden death sets off a chain of events, both large and small, that will change the major's life forever. Before he knows it, Major Pettigrew is on the outs with his sister-in-law and his son, in love with the local shopkeeper, and ready to wage war in the name of his father's gun.
Like the major himself, this novel is gentle, brainy, and sly. A true English delight!
