Making Toast: A Family Story

by Roger Rosenblatt

When his 38-year-old daughter suddenly dies, Roger Rosenblatt and his wife, Ginny, move in with his son-in-law and three grandchildren. There is little time to mourn, as life must go on, especially for the children. In this memoir, Rosenblatt recalls the year after Amy’s death and how life changed for him.

A few gripes:

• Rosenblatt doesn’t tell a linear story. Rather, this memoir is a collection of random musings.

• The author is not religious, yet has the audacity to challenge any God who would let his daughter die.

• The author lives in a bubble. He has perfect children and grandchildren. His career is stellar, and his is a name-dropper extraordinaire. This bubble makes something like death seem even more tragic, at least to him.

It was all very frustrating to read. Very whiny.
