It is the year 2044, and the state of our world is such that virtual reality is the only way to cope. Teen Wade Watts depends upon the virtual world to deal with his less than wonderful circumstances. Luckily, OASIS, a spectacular virtual world, has been created, and its creator, Jim Halliday, is much revered.
When Halliday died, he left a gift hidden within OASIS: the opportunity for one person to inherit Halliday’s vast fortune. Gamers have been trying to find this gift for years, and Wade is finally making some progress. Of course, it helps that Wade has been obsessed with Halliday for years and studied all of Halliday’s own obsessions, which include a large amount of 80s pop culture.
