A Game of Thrones

by George R. R. Martin

After watching the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, I felt compelled to read the novel upon which it is based. There are so many characters and relationships on this show—I had to read this novel to keep it all straight and better understand the actions of the characters. Surprisingly, the first season of the show closely follows the novel. Nice work, HBO!

With all of the characters, places, and intrigue, it is impossible to give a good summary of the novel. All I can say is this: it is a fantasy novel crossed with a novel of political intrigue. All of the characters are interesting, and the plots are fascinating. If you love political intrigue, you’ll love this novel.

Also, if you’re watching the show, and you don’t want to read the whole novel, it does include a very, very helpful appendix.
