The Secret Keeper

by Kate Morton

Here’s another “then & now” novel from Morton. Why do I have the sense that this is her signature style?

Anyway, our story begins with a bang: young Laurel witnesses a crime in the 1960s. Fast forward to 2011: Laurel is a successful actress and has always been haunted by what she saw fifty years ago. Her mother, who could explain everything to her, is now dying. Laurel is determined to find the missing pieces and finally understand the brutal crime she witnessed as a child.

What follows is a trip back in time, mostly to WWII London, though some events do pre-date the war.

Through Laurel’s mother’s story, readers slowly discover the meaning of the crime witnessed by young Laurel. The plot twists and turns, and the final twist is sort of ridiculous, but it works.

Like the other novel I read by Morton, The Secret Keeper is engrossing and entertaining. I’ll definitely read more of her novels.
