by Elinor Lipman
Dewing College, a school of dubious distinction, sets the stage for the amusing adventures of the eccentric Hatch family—David, Aviva, and their daughter Frederica. As the only dorm family on campus, the Hatches are extremely involved in the tightly knit college community.
Their lives are turned upside down when David’s ex, Laura Lee French, shows up at Dewing to be a dorm mother. Her colorful past and her general quirkiness immediately intrigue teenaged Frederica, much to her parents’ dismay.
Once Laura Lee meets the college’s president, the real fun begins. A love triangle, attempted suicide, and a huge snowstorm ensue.
While this is a quirky and engaging novel, it is nothing like Lipman’s previous novels. It lacks the lightness and witty banter that are the author’s hallmark. I would recommend this novel, but I would also say that it is one of her weaker efforts.
