When they are seven, Lily and Snow Flower become laotong, or lifelong female friends. They will send each other messages written in nu shu, the secret language of Chinese women. Some messages will be inscribed on a fan, some will be embroidered on handkerchiefs, and some will just be written on paper.
The girls will spend time together and swap stories and share in each other's development. They will marry and endure wifehood. And their bond will remain.
I don't want to give anything away. Just read this novel!!! It is an engrossing tale of female friendship in nineteenth century China. You will not be able to put down this book. I promise.
