King of the Mild Frontier: An Ill-Advised Autobiography

by Chris Crutcher

So, I read this for next week's Teen Volume conference at the library. It was this or The Sledding Hill, which I had already read and disliked. I started with an open mind and finished with a closed one.

Who is Chris Crutcher, and why does he think he's so great? He's just an ordinary guy who grew up in Idaho and wasn't a successful student, athlete, boy scout, or ladies' man. And he writes books for young adults, which appear to be based on his real life experiences.

It's hard to understand why this person would think that his autobiography would be of interest to anyone. There is no apparent organization in this book, and it just lacks substance. Crutcher doesn't even provide an explanation for his extremely high opinion of himself. I don't know what young people think about Crutcher, but this 36-year-old librarian thinks he's a mediocre writer who is a bit egotistical.
