This is the first mystery in the Richard Jury series. One question: why is there a Richard Jury series? I just finished the novel and have no idea of who Richard Jury is.
Anyway, Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jury is sent to the cozy village of Long Piddleton after two dead bodies are found. Both victims were murdered at inns, and both appear to be strangers to the village. But are they strangers to everyone? And what happens when more bodies start to pile up?
It is up to Jury to discover the murderer (and his/her motive) before anyone else is killed. One of the more intelligent locals, Melrose Plant, assists Jury.
This mystery left me cold. I had no sense of the sleuth. I didn't really have a sense of place (by the way, the author is an American writing about Britain). Just what is the appeal of this mystery series? Some might call it a police procedural, but I'd catalog it under "cozy." And "dud."
