The Shadow in the North

by Philip Pullman

A Sally Lockhart Mystery

The year is 1878, and Sally Lockhart is working as a financial consultant, as well as being the partner in the photographic business with Frederick Garland. All is well, until a client comes to Sally with a problem: she just lost 3000 pounds, her life savings, because Sally gave her a bum stock tip.

Determined to find out why the business collapsed and help her client regain her lost money, Sally begins a very dangerous investigation. Engaging Frederick, Jim, and even her ferocious dog, Chaka, Sally investigates the defunct shipping firm and its mysterious owner. Along the way, a magician, a seamstress, a medium, and an heiress become involved in the case.

And just when you thought it was all going to work out for Miss Lockhart, everything goes awry.

Wonderful story, as good as the first mystery. I can't wait to read the next one!
