The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring

by Richard Preston

When I picked up this book, I thought it was about trees. Big trees. California redwoods, which I'll see on vacation next month.

Wrong! Instead, this book about people who climb these (and other) tall trees. Some of these people are scientists, and some are just tree-climbers. Some are tree-climbers who become professional botanists, and some remain amateur.

I don't really know what else to say. The characters (real people) are interesting, and their stories are compelling. But I think I wanted to learn a little more about the trees and a little less about people's lives.

Still, this is a great nonfiction book from the author of The Hot Zone. Trivia: Richard Preston is the brother of Douglas Preston, beloved writer of thrillers.

Howdy.

Stumbled upon your blog while googling redwood and tree stuff. Noticed The Wild Trees on the page.

If you want to glean a bit more about those trees, even if it be but a glance as some images:

Atlas Grove and Grove of Titans redwoods

Those are some of the trees.

And actually, there is some stuff I added to the page that you might find good for learning - maybe some soil stuff.

So - a librarian. Nice. Lots of books to choose from.

Cheers,
