by Mary Stewart
Gilly Ramsey’s lonely childhood was brightened by visits from her godmother, Geillis. Years later, when Geillis dies, she leaves her estate to Gilly. Gilly is amazed and frightened by Thornyhold.
Thornyhold is beautiful, but overgrown. It contains many secrets and secret rooms. Gilly is overwhelmed by it and yet thrilled to be making it her home.
Add a love interest and a possible witch, and you’ve got a good old fashioned gothic romance.
I liked this slim novel. It has a likable narrator, an intriguing setting, and is short enough to avoid being too over the top. I think I would even consider reading another one of Stewart’s novels.
