Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street

by Michael Davis

I think the title says it all, don't you? Seriously, this is the story of how Sesame Street came to be. From the dawn of children's educational programming to Elmo, Davis takes the reader on an exhausting journey. And a very, very, very slow journey.

After I had read about half of this book, I had to set it down. It was so tiring and frustrating. When was I going to learn about the Muppets? When was the first show going to be taped? And, finally, who really cares about Captain Kangaroo? I want to learn about Sesame Street!

What I did enjoy about this book is learning about the major players (actors and Muppeteers) and getting a feel for the process of creating a new show. SS was a groundbreaking experience in many ways, and I am glad that I now know how it all happened. What I didn't enjoy was all of the behind the scenes research stuff. That was tedious.
