This is the exceedingly pretentious tale of a middle-aged college professor and her restoration of a house in Tuscany. Not only is she a great scholar, writer, and restorer of villas, Frances also fancies herself a great chef.
So, what is this book? Travel memoir? Culinary memoir? House restoration memoir? All of the above and none of the above, if you ask me.
What bothered me most about this book is that it lacks heart. There is no emotion, no humor, and most importantly, no sense of character in this memoir. She only mentions her significant other as Ed; we learn absolutely nothing else about him. And what we learn about her is what we infer from her writing.
Not recommended.
