Riders of the Purple Sage

by Zane Grey

It’s my 8th western of 2009!

Utah sets the stage for rustlers, Mormons, and romance in this classic western novel. Young Jane Withersteen is a Mormon with a mind of her own. She doesn’t want to marry Elder Tull, and she sympathizes with the Gentiles. She uses the inheritance from her father to live on her own terms and not be controlled by the church.

Of course, the Mormons do not like this one bit. When they realize that she will not comply with the church, they decide to take her down. She stands alone until a man named Lassiter comes to town. . .

This was not my kind of story, but it’s a classic in the realm of westerns, so I just had to read it.
