by Alexander McCall Smith
One apartment building in Edinburgh introduces the reader to a cast of characters:
• 21-year-old Pat, in her second gap year, working at an art gallery
• Bruce, Pat’s handsome flatmate, narcissist, not a model employee
• 5-year-old Bertie, saxophone player, speaker of Italian, over-managed child, longs to be like all of the other boys
• Domenica, 60-ish dilettante, gossip, good friend to Pat
Originally published in serial form, this is a very, very mild novel. No deep character development and no intricate plotting. There are, however, quite a few humorous situations, and some of the characters are quite endearing (Pat and Bertie).
