Dirty Little Secrets

by C. J. Omololu

Lucy has a secret. And her mother has a secret. And her older brother and sister have a secret. The secret? Lucy’s mother is a hoarder.

The house is filled with, well, everything. The house is not clean, the heat does not work, and Lucy generally showers at the gym. She also enjoys spending the night at a friend’s house.

At sixteen, Lucy is counting the days until she graduates and can move out of her mother’s house. She only has to keep this secret for two more years. She can do that, can’t she?

When the situation home takes a turn for the worse, Lucy is faced with the most terrifying aspect of her secret life: discovery.

I really appreciated the author’s understanding of the effects of hoarding on children. The anxiety felt by Lucy is apparent; reading the novel made me anxious. What I didn’t like was the ending of the story. I felt it was a cop-out, almost an easy way out for both Lucy and the author.
