by John Banville
Adam Godley is dying. The renowned mathematician lies in bed, while his family holds vigil. His wife, Ursula, struggles with the drink, his daughter, Petra, teeters on the edge of sanity, and his son, Adam, is trying to keep his marriage intact. Boring, right?
Well, the gods are also watching the Godley (!) family. Hermes narrates, Zeus interferes, and Pan makes an appearance.
This is a very slow and very intellectual novel. Banville is a writer’s writer, and you definitely need to be in the mood for this one.
