Eliza Benedict appears to have the perfect life: successful husband, two charming children, and a house in the suburbs. The truth is, Eliza never feels safe.
When she was 15, she was abducted and raped by Walter Bowman. Bowman abducted and killed several girls, and Eliza is the only survivor. Now, at the age of 38, Eliza will live to see the execution of Walter, but Walter has other plans. Walter has contacted Eliza, and that is where our story begins.
The first part of the novel is told in a “then and now” format. We learn about Eliza’s present, as well as the 39 days with Walter in 1985. There are a lot of questions for the reader:
• Why has Walter contacted Eliza?
• How and why did Eliza survive the Walter experience?
• How will Eliza react to Walter’s desire to speak with her?
Intriguing and engrossing, this novel forces readers to consider the past and its relationship with the present. Of course, it also explores the complex and frightening relationship between captive and captor.
