The Temptation of the Night Jasmine

by Lauren Willig

This 5th novel in the Pink Carnation series reminds me of why I generally avoid books written in series: the author cannot sustain the magic of the first novel. Sure, the first two or three are worth reading, but quality inevitably declines, as in this one.

Lady Charlotte Lansdowne had a crush on her cousin, Robert, Duke of Dovedale, when she was young. Much later, after a twelve year stint in India, Dovedale returns, and Charlotte, of course, is smitten.

But Dovedale has not returned to England for love; he is back to avenge a murder in India. That is where our story begins.

And it’s not a good story. Gone is the fun spy plot. Gone is the terrific romance plot. This entry does not fit the rest of the series at all. Very disappointing.
