Shadow Tag

by Louise Erdrich

When Irene America discovers that her husband, Gil, has been reading her diary, she fights back. She starts another diary, a true diary, and keeps it in a security box at the bank. She then uses her other diary to write things that are designed to hurt Gil. Some of those things are not even true.

The story of Irene and Gil and the death of their marriage is told through the diaries, as well as an omniscient narrator. The reader will learn just how abusive the couple’s relationship is and how damaged their children have become as a result of it.

Alcoholism, violence, and mental abuse paint a painful portrait of a broken relationship.
