Middle Age: A Romance

by Joyce Carol Oates

Our story begins in Salthill-on-Hudson, NY, an affluent community full of the middle-aged. The Salthill crowd’s world is rocked when one of their own suddenly dies. Adam Berendt is the quintessential Salthill man: artistic, intelligent, outdoorsy, and quietly wealthy. Moreover, he is extremely charismatic. Adam’s death is most difficult for the women of Salthill. As readers will learn, many women loved Adam.

The novel focuses on what happens to the people who loved Adam the most. Oates describes how obsessed the women are and takes us on a journey back to reality.

Dense and wordy, but good.
