Beautiful Days

by Anna Godbersen

A Bright Young Things novel

When we last encountered our bright young things, Cordelia had finally met her bootlegging father, only to have him die shortly thereafter.

Now, Cordelia is living with her brother, Charlie, in their father’s mansion. Cordelia’s best friend, Letty Larkspur, is also living with them. Charlie has taken over the family business and asked Cordelia to help him with the opening of a speakeasy.

Meanwhile, Letty is rehearsing her songs and dances because Cordelia has promised to make Letty the club’s headliner. And Astrid? She’s rehearsing for her eventual role as Charlie Grey’s wife.

I have to say that this series is not nearly as good as Godbersen’s Luxe series. The writing is not as tight as in previous novels, the historical details of the novels do not seem as well researched, and the series lacks the narrative tension that drove Godbersen’s first series. The pace quickened a bit in the last 100 pages or so, but that was a little too late for me.
