by J. R. R. Tolkien
The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, this novel introduces readers to the unforgettable hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. Baggins lives a quiet and comfortable life in his hobbit hole, and that’s the way he likes it. Everything changes when a pack of dwarves shows up at his door. They are accompanied by the great wizard, Gandalf, who will take them on the adventure of a lifetime.
Gandalf has chosen the hobbit to act as a burglar and help the dwarves reclaim their stolen treasure. Along the way, the hobbit and his crew will encounter trolls, a dragon, and all sorts of danger. And there’s a special ring that Bilbo finds along the way. . .
This novel is not difficult to read, and Bilbo certainly is a sympathetic character, but The Hobbit just doesn’t do anything for me. It is slow in parts. Plus, I don’t think that I’ve ever gotten over the horror of being forced to watch The Fellowship of the Ring.
