I have kept a reading journal since 2000. Feeling a little modern, I am now going to keep an online record of my literary conquests. After each book, I'll post a summary and comments. Maybe you'll decide to read one of them. And maybe you won't.

The Man Who Went Up in Smoke
by Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo
In the second novel of the Martin Beck series, Inspector Beck is asked to abandon his plans for holiday and fly to Budapest. Once in Hungary, Martin is put on the case of a missing person. Alf Matsson, a Swedish journalist, is missing. In fact, he seems to have disappeared into thin air.
A little digging by Beck leads to a more sinister reality for Alf. The journalist has been involved in drug dealing.
Without help from anyone, Beck listens and observes, and, of course, solves the case. As in the first entry of the series, the prose is spare, the descriptions never exceed what is necessary, and an interesting plot is presented.
Quick reading!
