by Kate Morton
Engrossing and atmospheric, The Distant Hours is a classic tale of family secrets with a gothic twist.
Told in a “then and now” format, the novel introduces us to Edie Burchill, who works for a publisher in 1992 (now). Edie has secretly discovered that her mother, an evacuee in WWII, was evacuated to the home of a famous writer, Raymond Blythe.
This leads to the “then” half of the narrative and the Blythe sisters, Percy, Saffy, and Juniper. The Blythe sisters/spinsters still live in Milderhurst Castle. What happened while Edie’s mother lived at the castle? And why are all three of the sisters still unmarried and living in that ramshackle castle?
Prepare to be transported, and prepare to be absorbed by this tale. I cannot wait to read another novel by Ms. Morton.
